Experiential Learning Students Complete 2019 Summer Internships

This summer, fifteen students successfully completed the Summer 2019 CiPASS Experiential Learning Internship Program.  This U.S. Department of Education-funded program supports hands-on learning and training opportunities for CCNY STEM students.  Projects included:

  • Analyzing and developing predictive tools for Water Stress across the United States (with Prof. Naresh Devineni and Prof. Ronak Etempadpour)
  • Using Augmented and Virtual Reality systems to help the disabled navigate, communicate and interact within stressful environments (with Zhigang Zhu and Prof. Hao Tang)
  • Developing a computational toolbox for Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) sensors (with Prof. Jei Wei)
  • Observation of Boundary Winds with Doppler Lidar (with Prof. Mark Arend)
  • Machine learning analysis and evaluation of NYC weather research and forecasting (WRF) weather predictions (with Prof. Michael Grossberg)
  • Wind tunnel studies for a resilient electric power infrastructure in Puerto Rico (with Prof. Jorge González)

Students gained experience with new technologies and techniques, developed connections with industry, advanced their project management skills, and many experienced working in project teams for the first time.  Teams presented their research to peers and faculty on August 1st. CiPASS congratulates the 2019 cohort on the quality of their research and hopes that the experience will contribute to their continuing studies at CCNY and future careers.

Summer Bridge Success – 2019

More than 90 students participated in CiPASS’ Math Summer Bridge 2019 program this year.  Now in its third year, Summer Bridge provides incoming CCNY STEM students with the opportunity to take a math course for free and potentially move forward a level for the fall semester, saving them time and tuition. This year’s cohort took Advanced Algebra or Pre-Calculus and also participated in important workshops connecting them to campus and resources, including presentations from the Grove School of Engineering and The Division of Sciences, a tour of CCNY, the Writing Center, the Zahn Center, and more.

Summer Bridge students completed their final exam on August 8th, then celebrated their hard work with pizza. CiPASS wishes them success as they begin their college careers, and hopes they will continue to engage with CiPASS programs at CCNY in the future.
