CONNECTING STUDENTS WITH ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE ON EVERY CLASS ASSIGNMENT

Mastering the coursework at college can be difficult, particularly when students – like many of those at City College – have many competing demands on their time and attention. The Early Alert System provides a helping hand in two ways. It sends the student a discreet, personal note when their performance on a class assignment could be a sign that they are falling behind. It also mobilizes a group of Peer Educational Partners, or PeEPs, to provide academic support, and a group of Academic Advisors to provide additional assistance.

HOW IT WORKS

Students in participating classes receive Alerts from the Early Alert System if their course grades fall below an instructor-designated threshold. Notices are sent providing them with information on how to arrange a tutoring session with a peer tutor (known as Peer Educational Partners, or PeEPs). PeEP services are available for free to all enrolled students in STEM subjects at CCNY.

Students can visit PeEPs without making an appointment or without getting an Alert.

The support does not stop there. A student might receive an Alert because they have issues with the material. They might also receive an Alert because other issues in their lives are limiting their ability to focus on the material. If a student receives more than one Alert in the same semester in the same course, an Academic Counselor will contact the student and offer assistance.
